Guided walking tour - On the trail of the Bauhaus in Erfurt

The young avantgarde artists and designers around Walter Gropius faced widespread antipathy in Weimar, even during their first year, but their reception in nearby Erfurt, Jena and Gera was significantly more sympathetic. An important link was forged between Erfurt and the Bauhaus by students at the local applied arts school who went on to the Bauhaus Schools in Weimar and Dessau. The Neues Bauen conversion of various commercial buildings in the city centre set a trailblazing example. These are still striking features of today's cityscape.

Erfurt - Architectural Pearl and Mirror of the Times

With its atmospheric alleyways and tiny squares, the delightful old part of the city has largely retained its medieval structure and is an eloquent monument to the German style of town architecture. Erfurt's twin symbols - the cathedral and the Church of St. Severus - stand side by side, a majestic presence on the skyline and a masterful combination of Gothic architecture unparalleled in Europe. You must not miss seeing the Merchants’ Bridge, which has the longest row of inhabited buildings on any European bridge. Another impressive building is the neo-Gothic town hall with its numerous wall paintings going up the staircase. On Fischmarkt, the mansions "Zum Breiten Herd" and "Zum Roten Ochsen" date back to the Renaissance. Other buildings of interest in the heart of the town are the Jugendstil (art nouveau) buildings, the post office building and the former "Römischer Kaiser" department store on Anger. Enjoy discovering the architectural styles of different epochs.
